Alice Walton today announced that Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has acquired "Autumn Landscape," a painting by renowned Hudson River School artist Thomas Moran, as part of the Bentonville museum's permanent collection.
Walton, chairman of the museum's board of trustees, made the announcement at the annual meeting of the Northwest Arkansas Council. The announcement came "as part of a presentation updating the Council on the museum's progress and economic impact to the region," a museum press release stated.
The painting had been owned by the Harvey & Bernice Jones Trust. Bernice Jones bought the painting in 1960 for the office of her husband, Harvey, founder of Jones Truck Lines in Springdale, the museum said.
"Bernice did not know it was a Moran when she purchased it - she just liked it and thought it would look good in Harvey's office," said Joel Carver, president of the Jones Trust Board of Trustees. "Harvey and Bernice wanted the painting to stay in northwest Arkansas where the people of the communities they called home could enjoy it."
Moran (1837-1926) is also known for his paintings of the American West, which have been credited with helping inspire the creation of Yellowstone National Park. His paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.
"Autumn Landscape, a painting of a Pennsylvania valley, was once thought 'lost' and only re-surfaced when acquired by Jones," the museum said.
